We believe that all children deserve to have a safe, nurturing environment where they can thrive.

Our Mission

Nearly 1714 children here in Boulder County experience abuse or neglect each year. As these children grow up, they will be faced with a difficult path that is most likely bordered in physical, psychological, or emotional trauma and the complexities that go hand-in-hand with it. They will have moved more times than they can count, have had several caseworkers and caregivers, and will have even attended many different schools.

Voices for Children CASA of Boulder County provides trained, Court Appointed Special Advocate Volunteers to advocate for the needs of abused and neglected children in Boulder County.

Our History

Our story begins back in 1977, when Seattle Judge David Soukup grew frustrated as he looked around the courtroom. In the cases involving children who were abused or neglected, Judge Soukup saw lawyers representing the parents and the parents’ best interest, caseworkers representing their agencies and their agencies’ best interests…but no one was solely advocating for the children or the children’s best interest.

Judge Soukup quickly realized that the biggest resource for children who were abused or neglected was their local community, where volunteers could be recruited and trained to be the child’s voice in court. Soon, the pilot program garnered national attention and lead to the birth of the National CASA organization in 1982.

Our Founding

Soon after the founding of the National CASA organization, Voices for Children CASA of Boulder County was established in 1985 by the Boulder members of the Junior League of Denver and the Boulder County Bar Association. We serve kids from all over Boulder County, including Boulder, Longmont, Lafayette, Louisville, and the mountain towns.

Our volunteers are age 21-88, and come from all over the world and all walks of life. We are united by a desire to be of service to kids. Voices for Children was among the first county-based CASA programs in the country, following the lead of the flagship program established in 1977 in Seattle. There are over 950 CASA programs serving children in all 50 states.

Voices for Children CASA has grown dramatically in the past ten years, from a program that served only a fraction of the kids in our local child welfare system to a program that can serve every victim of child abuse in the Boulder County court.
